I'm currently supporting a prominent Federal Government Department in sourcing an experienced Data Engineer to join a dynamic and forward-thinking team. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to national priorities by shaping and delivering critical data solutions that support skills, employment, and workforce policy initiatives across Australia.
This role sits within a department that drives secure and fair work opportunities for Australians, and as a Data Engineer, you'll play a key role in enabling data-driven decision-making and service delivery at scale.
About the Role
As a Data Engineer, your primary focus will be to make raw data usable and accessible for analytics, reporting, machine learning, and operational improvements. You will be responsible for the development, transformation, and optimisation of structured and unstructured data pipelines in a modern Azure-based environment.
You'll collaborate with engineers, analysts, data scientists, UX teams, and business stakeholders to enhance the department's data capabilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Build, maintain, and optimise scalable data pipelines using PySpark and SQL
- Develop and automate data flows in Azure Data Factory, ensuring alignment with data governance requirements
- Integrate and manage Azure services such as KeyVaults, Storage Containers, Access Control Lists, and Databricks
- Support business intelligence applications through structured data pipelines, SQL endpoints, and documentation
- Administer Qlik environments, PostgreSQL databases, and maintain performance on on-prem or AWS-hosted servers
- Apply CI/CD practices using Azure DevOps, Git repositories, branching, merging, and resolving conflicts
- Work closely with stakeholders to define data requirements, address data science needs, and support Authority to Operate (ATO) processes
- Identify opportunities to automate, streamline, and modernise data handling processes
- Collaborate in Agile teams and contribute to continuous improvement through innovation and understanding of existing processes
Skills and Experience - Essential
- Enterprise-level experience building and maintaining data pipelines in PySpark/SQL and ADF
- Strong knowledge of Azure services, including Databricks, KeyVault, storage containers, and integration patterns
- Proven ability to generate clear documentation for data pipelines and processes
- Experience in Qlik administration and server management on on-prem/AWS, including PostgreSQL DB maintenance
- Solid understanding of CI/CD deployment practices using Azure DevOps and Git version control
- Knowledge of data science workflows, including data cleansing, delta loads, and Azure Cognitive Services
- Strong collaboration and communication skills to work across tech, business, and architecture teams
- Experience supporting cyber requirements and ATO documentation processes
Desirable Skills
- Coding experience in R
- Hands-on experience with provisioning Azure Data environments
- Understanding of the legislative frameworks governing data in the Australian Public Sector
- Previous experience within Government agencies, especially the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations
