Lead Machine Learning Specialist (AI Engineer)
Location: Canberra, ACT (Hybrid - 3 days in office)
Contract: 6 months with 4 x extensions
Start Date: 1st July 2025


About the Role

Experis Australia has been engaged by a Federal Government agency in Canberra to identify a Lead Machine Learning Specialist (AI Engineer) for a 6-month contract, with the possibility of four extensions. This role is critical in shaping and guiding the AI/ML technical landscape within the agency, ensuring it aligns with current and future business needs.

As the Lead AI Engineer, you will have the opportunity to design, develop, and deploy AI/ML solutions while also providing strategic leadership to establish a sustainable AI/ML capability within the branch. The role requires both hands-on technical expertise and strong leadership skills to drive AI/ML initiatives effectively.

Key Responsibilities

  • Technical Leadership - Guide the AI/ML strategy, ensuring alignment with the agency's objectives.

  • AI/ML Development & Deployment - Architect, design, and implement Microsoft-based AI/ML solutions that meet business needs.

  • Research & Advisory - Stay up to date with advancements in AI/ML technologies and provide expert advice on their application within the agency.

  • Hands-On Implementation - Oversee, but also actively contribute to, the development and deployment of AI/ML models.

  • Team Development - Provide leadership in establishing and growing the AI/ML capability within the branch.

  • Stakeholder Engagement - Collaborate with key internal and external stakeholders to drive AI/ML adoption and ensure project success.


Required Skills & Experience

  1. Proven technical leadership in designing, developing, and deploying Microsoft AI/ML solutions.

  2. Strong ability to advise on the latest advancements in AI/ML technologies and their practical applications.

  3. Architectural expertise in designing end-to-end AI/ML solutions that align with business requirements.

  4. Hands-on experience in overseeing and implementing AI/ML models in production environments.

  5. Leadership and strategic advisory skills to establish and build a sustainable AI/ML capability within the agency.


Additional Information

  • Candidates must be Australian Citizens and be eligible to obtain or hold the required security clearance.

  • This role requires hybrid work, with three days per week onsite in the Canberra office.

  • The successful candidate will be required to complete a Deed Poll - Confidentiality Undertaking and Acknowledgement of Legal Obligations upon acceptance of any offer and before commencement.
